Going Deeper

This section is provided for those who may wish to spend time this week going deeper with the material from the sermon, or for study in small groups. This is an optional opportunity to take the message and internalize and deepen your understanding. Small groups are welcome to do pieces of this as time allows.

Read John 15:18-27 and 1 Thess. 3:1-7.

In the passage on John, study the descriptions of the “world” and “you”.

Create a list which captures the expressions relating to “the world” and “you”. What is true of the world? What is true of you? For example: “The world is able to hate Jesus” and “I am not of this world so the world hates me.”

Based on what the passage says, how would you define the “world”?

Based on what the passage teaches, who are you?

What in this passage could provide you with comfort or encouragement?

In 1 Thess. 3:1-7, Paul and the Thessalonians are experiencing persecution. How would you differentiate between suffering and persecution?

Identity the two purposes of Paul’s sending Timothy to the believers. What did Paul want to see happen for the Thessalonians? What did Paul desire for his own affections?

Have you experienced persecution (mild or severe)? If so, what strengthened, or perhaps would have strengthened, your faith?

Do you know anyone who is being persecuted for their faith? What could you do, that might cost you, that would strengthen and encourage them?
