Going Deeper

This section is provided for those who may wish to spend time this week going deeper with the material from the sermon, or for study in small groups.  This is an optional opportunity to take the message and internalize and deepen your understanding.  Small groups are welcome to do pieces of this as time allows.

This week for the “Going Deeper” section, I truly want you to go deeper into what we talked about on Sunday.  Here is the exercise I’d like you to try…

Monday: Read 1 Thess. chapters 1-3 a couple of times, slowly and thoughtfully, considering this great recounting of God’s work.  After reading, simply ask this question of God, “What would you like me to learn from this, Father?” Spend the day listening.

Tuesday: Read 1 Thess. chapters 1-3 again, just as you did Monday. However, focus on the themes of faith, hope, and love.  Where do you see them?  Where do they come from?  What do they look like?  How important are they?  What makes them so vital?  Once you have read and considered these great virtues, ask God this simple question, “Father, what are you telling me in this passage?”  Spend the day listening.

Wednesday: Study 1 Thess. 1:2-3 as best you can by breaking it into pieces and analyzing the statements and connections.  Ask God, “Father, when you look at me, is there one of these virtues you wish to grow in me?”  Listen to what God brings to your awareness.  Then, with the virtue God has put on your heart, make this request of God, “Father, thank you for showing me this area to grow.  Please, by your Spirit, help me to grow in my ___________________ these next few days.”

Thursday – Saturday: Spend time reading or considering how Jesus demonstrates this virtue, and how the cross and resurrection encourage or enable your living this way.  Try NOT to focus on “doing” whatever the virtue is; rather, focus upon this prayer – “Father, help me to walk by your spirit today, to see, to speak, to act as Jesus, especially when it comes to deepening my __________________.” See what happens.
