Going Deeper
This section is provided for those who may wish to spend time this week going deeper with the material from the sermon, or for study in small groups. This is an optional opportunity to take the message and internalize and deepen your understanding. Small groups are welcome to do pieces of this as time allows.
I’m going to provide two passages concerning church leadership for you to study this week.
First, read Acts 20:17-32. This passage is descriptive of Paul’s ministry and his instruction to leaders within the church.
1) Who was Paul speaking to in this passage?
2) What strikes you about this passage? What stands out?
3) Who was Paul serving in his ministry? What do you think this truth meant to Him?
4) What does this passage say about authority? Specifically, how did the elders ultimately become leaders?
5) What commands are given to the overseers (v.28-32)?
6) What metaphor is used of the overseers? Consider some of the responsibilities involved in executing this metaphor?
7) How would you describe the heart of a leader?
Whose church is it? What is the rationale for this?
9) What role does the Word play in Paul’s instruction?
10) How can you pray for yourself and your leaders based on this passage?
Second, read Hebrews 13:15-18. This passage includes instruction to those in the church who are not currently serving in the role of elder.
1) Consider the importance of the place of Jesus in this section. In what ways is Jesus integral in all that the author commands and encourages?
2) What commands and exhortations are given to the church body in this section?
3) Specifically in relationship to leaders, what is the rationale given for obeying and submitting to your leaders? Consider what is not listed.
4) What should mark the heart of a godly follower toward God? How about toward leadership?
5) What is something you could do to make it a joy to lead you?
6) How can you pray for yourself and your leaders based on this passage?
