Focusing on Mark 6:30-36
How would you summarize Jesus’ response to the crowds?
How would you summarize the apostles’ response to the crowds?
Writing Exercise
Write a paragraph describing the crowd as if this event were to happen today. First, imagine what the crowd would have looked like 2,000 years ago – Who would be there? Why? What were they wearing? What were they looking for? Remember that in Matthew’s gospel they are described as “harassed and helpless.” Now imagine that crowd consisting of people from today – What would that crowd look like? Who would be there? Who would not? What are they looking for? What is harassing them?
Can you see yourself in the crowd? How come?
Focusing on Mark 6:37-45
Why did Jesus command the disciples to feed the crowd? What conclusion did Jesus expect them to reach?
Ultimately – who fed the crowd and satisfied their need?
In the feeding of the 5,000 what does the bread represent? Consider Mark 8:1-22; 14:22 and John 6:33-35 in your conclusion.
What is the significance of the left over baskets of bread in relation to Jesus’ initial command, “You give them something to eat”? What are they to give? When?
How can you incorporate this passage into your prayer life?
