Going Deeper
This section is provided for those who may wish to spend time this week going deeper with the material from the sermon, or for study in small groups. This is an optional opportunity to take the message and internalize and deepen your understanding. Small groups are welcome to do pieces of this as time allows.
Scripture Memory: Colossians 1:9-12. Paul’s Church Prayer
Scripture Study: Colossians 1
What are some initial observations you can make about the church from this chapter?
Examine Paul’s prayer (v.9-12).
• What does Paul ask God to give the Colossian Christians?
• What is the intended goal of Paul’s prayer?
• What are the outcomes if this prayer is answered?
• How does this prayer connect with your life?
How could you grow in spiritual wisdom and understanding? What role does the church play in that? Consider the sermon on Exodus 18 – What place does the Word of God play in gaining spiritual wisdom?
Verses 12-14, 21-23 speak VERY powerful truths of grace to you. According to these two passages, who are you, and what do you have, because of God’s work on your behalf? What part did you play in bringing about these new states of existence? How does this knowledge help you understand the purpose of Paul’s prayer? What’s the motivation Paul gives for us to “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord?” (v.10)
Verses 15-20 present some of the greatest statements regarding Jesus’ identity. Write them out. Who is Jesus? What has Jesus accomplished for you?
Daily Prayer: Father, please provide me with an opportunity to share your words of hope, comfort, and confidence with one of your children so I can help encourage their faith. Amen.
Pay attention – God will answer!
