Going Deeper
Use this section to go deeper with the material from the sermon, or for personal study or for use with small groups.
This week I’d like you to read the epistle to the Philippians. It is not a very long letter consisting of only 4 chapters (roughly four pages). Read the letter from beginning to end 2-3 times before you begin answering these questions. Perhaps you could just read the letter 2-3 times for the first couple of days next week and then answer questions on Wednesday or Thursday.
Questions…
1) What parts of the letter encouraged you? What do you think God may be seeking to say to you through them?
2) Did parts of the letter challenge you? What might it be asking you to change? If you were challenged… remember that “it is God who works in you…” He will help you grow.
I’d like to focus some thoughts on chapters 1-2 especially in relationship to community and FBC.
3) Where does Paul’s hope for this church rest? Has the church arrived or are they “in process?” How might this shift your thinking about FBC?
4) Consider the phrase “partnership in the gospel”. The word “partnership” is the Greek word “koinonia” which is used for “fellowship” or “sharing in”. How does this phrase help you understand what the church is and why we are here? Why are you part of FBC?
5) How did Paul pray for this church? What did he pray for? Would you pray this every day for the next month for FBC?
6) What did he expect of them as “partners” in the gospel?
7) What does Paul exhort the church to do? Is this active or passive? What would this witness to? (1:27-30; 2:1-5, 12-18)
8) Describe the relationship between Jesus’ condescension and Christian unity (2:1-11). Do you have any encouragement? Do you have any comfort? What damages Christian unity?
9) What is God doing in you (and us)? What are we to do? Where can you find hope? Where are you challenged?
10) What separates Timothy from so many others? How do you look out for the interests of Christ?
Sorry, no sermon due to technical difficulties
