Grace for the Way
Part 3: The Disorienting & Reorienting Power of Grace
10/30/2011
Speaker:  Pastor Steve Thomas
Luke 18:9-14

“‘I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other…’” (Luke 18:14)

The parable’s big question:

The parable’s disorienting answer:

I.  Case study: __________________________________________________
_________________________________________
(v.10-12)

II.  Case study: ___________________________________________________
___________________________________________
(v.10,13)

Reorient, remember, and receive ________________________________

Salvation is by __________________________________ through ____________________________________ in _____________________________________.

Going Deeper

Use this section to go deeper with the material from the sermon, or for personal study or for use with small groups.

This week you will be studying two passages which deal with gift  vs. works righteousness: One is a  parable of Jesus in Luke 18:9-14 and the other is a proclamation of Paul in Rom. 3:19-28.

The Parable: Read Luke 18:9-14 answering these questions.

1)     Who is the target audience of Jesus’ parable? What is one of their defining attitudes toward others?

2)     Describe the Pharisee’s prayer noting posture, place, and thinking. What stands out to you?

3)     How is the Pharisee oriented toward God and others? What does this tell you about the “righteousness” of the Pharisee? What does he fail to see?

4)     Describe the tax collector’s prayer noting, posture, place, and thinking. What stands out to you?

5)     How is the tax collector oriented toward God and others?

6)     What does the tax collector do that the Pharisee does not? (Note: Mercy is a translation of the word “propitiation”.)

7)     What is the difference between the two according to Jesus?

8)     Who do you relate with? What challenges you?

The Proclamation: Read Romans 3:19-28 answering these questions.

1)     What is the purpose of the law stated in Rom. 3:19-20?

2)     What does Paul say that all men need in order to be before God? To be in His sight?

3)     The Pharisee created a “me” vs. “them” orientation to establish his standing before God… what does Paul say?

4)     How is someone justified in Rom. 3:19-20?  Is justification active or passive (do you do it or is it done to you)?

5)     What role did Jesus play in this? (Note: Propitiation means to cover, make atonement for, and is rooted in the sacrifice in the Old Testament).

6)     Does grace break justice or exceed it? Is grace cheap?

7)     What is the impact of grace upon the recipient?

8)     How does this passage challenge and encourage you?

The Proclamation and the Parable: In what ways do you see the two passages harmonize? How does the parable of Jesus align with the proclamation of Paul? How does the proclamation of Paul (after the death/resurrection of Jesus) bring greater understanding to the parable?
