Going Deeper
Use this section to go deeper with the material from the sermon, or for personal study, or for use with small groups.
This week read Psalm 136 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and let your study of these passages prepare your heart for Thanksgiving Day.
What are some of the reasons God is thanked in Psalm 136?
While much of the Psalm is written from a perspective of God’s work on behalf of the nation Israel, how has Jesus’ completed work of redemption made this Psalm applicable to you?
What has Jesus done for you that you can forever find joy in remembering and thanksgiving in response?
Have there been times in your life when it was hard to “give thanks”? Are you in one of those seasons now? What do you think Paul meant by exhorting the Thessalonians to “give thanks in all circumstances”?
Do you believe 1 Thess. 5:16 is telling people to feel joyful all the time or to rejoice even when you don’t feel like it? How might Jesus’ own life help answer that question?
What areas of your life hinder or distract your praying, rejoicing, and thanking God? What could you do to respond to God’s exhortations in 1 Thess. 5:16-18?
What are some ways you could create space to rejoice before the Lord and give thanks to Him in your life? Where could you look to find reasons to give Him thanks?
Encouragement: If you struggle to rejoice, give thanks, and enjoy prayer… talk to God about it and find someone to pray with you that God would help heal your heart and guide your eyes to Jesus and His loving sacrifice for you and continued presence with you. Keep your eyes upon Jesus.
Challenge: Write your own Psalm of Thanksgiving and consider sharing it as part of your Thanksgiving celebration. Look at Psalm 100 or 136 for some guidance.
