We Pray to a God Who Reigns
1/29/12
Speaker:  Pastor Steve Thomas
Acts 4:23-37

“And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken…” (4:31)

We (The Church Gathered) pray…

When did they pray?

Who prayed?

Whom did they pray to?

What did they pray for?

The God who reigns….

1) _______________ them personally

2) _______________ them for effective mission

3) _______________ them in radical love

_______________ them under grace

Going Deeper

Use this section to go deeper with the material from the sermon, or for personal study, or for use with small groups.

This week spend time reading two very significant chapters in John and then Acts 4 in harmony with each other. John and Luke are both different authors but equally inspired by God. I’m not going to give you lots of questions to ask the text this week. Rather, read it, study it yourself, and look for parallel ideas.

Read John 15, 16 and Acts 4.

Interacting with the Text

In what ways do you see the Vine and Branches metaphor played out in the historical reality of the first century church in Acts 4?

What does John 15 and 16 indicate about prayer? What connections do you see with Acts 4?

What did Jesus seek to prepare His followers for after His death and resurrection? How does this parallel with Acts 4?

According to John 15:16 what did Jesus choose His people to do? How are we to do this? Again, how does this parallel Acts 4?

What is the foundation of the faith preached in Acts 4? How might this truth inform the metaphor in John 15?

Personal Interaction

What challenges you personally in these two passages?

What is one thing you could do this week to improve your prayer life?

What do you find harder – radical love or radical witness?

In what ways has your faith in Jesus Christ created opposition or oppression in your life? Has the world hated you?

What is one radically loving act you can do this week? Who could you ask to pray with you about this action before you do it?
