Going Deeper
Use this section to go deeper with the material from the sermon, or for personal study, or for use with small groups.
Study Eph. 6:5-9 and Col. 3:22-4:1. in light of your vocation. Remember, vocation does not necessarily include compensation – students and stay at home parents these apply to you as well.
Study Passages Eph. 6:5-9 & Col. 3:22-4:1
1) List out the exhortations Paul directs toward slaves and masters noting behaviors and attitudes.
2) Which is primary – the heart attitude or the behavior?
3) What are some ways that Paul’s instruction addresses the means for heart change? Consider the audience, the people he’s addressing, and the words he chooses.
Looking for the Powerful Pattern of Sound Doctrine
1) Read Ephesians and Colossians out loud listening for the order Paul gives to the gospel before life instruction. Can you find the “hinges” where the letters shift focus?
2) Why would Paul consistently place sound beliefs before the moral and social admonitions?
3) Read Ephesians 5:1-2. What part does this verse play in the instruction to slaves and masters? How might the truths asserted encourage the heart change called for in Eph. 6:5-9?
4) Read Col. 3:1-3, 12. How do these verses encourage the actions called for in 3:22-4:1?
Your Application.
1) Replace the word “slave” in your list with a word that fits you (student or employee). If you are a manager or employer, replace master. Try to identify one contemporary illustration for each admonition.
2) What is one behavior or attitude on this list that challenges you? Look inside your heart, what is driving your lack of godliness? What is at the root? *If you become aware of a sin in your heart, confess and repent (turn from false belief) for spiritual healing. Let me encourage you to share this struggle with a Christian friend or one of the elders at FBC.
3) What is one action you can take this week that will adorn the gospel of Christ in your vocational life (mom, student, employee, or employer)?

Going Deeper
Use this section to go deeper with the material from the sermon, or for personal study, or for use with small groups.
Read Titus 2 and Colossians 3.
List the categories of people Paul addresses in verses 1-8.
Which category most applies to you?
What are you called to become? Use your words to describe God’s vision for your life.
Describe what that might look like in practical, specific terms for your life. Where does this passage hit home?
We have talked about how fear and pride are self-centered motivators for godliness rather than grace. How might fear or pride underlie these exhortations?
Paul splits the church into genders and generations… how has your fear or pride hindered your ability to love and encourage other generations or genders? Have you seen your heart motivated by fear or pride? If there is a specific occurrences… pray about repenting and confessing that sin to find forgiveness and healing.
How does God’s grace challenge how you relate to other genders or generations? How does it inform the exhortations given to you?
Read Titus 2:11-14 and Colossians 3. What are some similarities you see? What provides the dynamic to live a vintage life?
How has Jesus death and resurrection already affected you as a Christian? Make a list from Titus 2 and Colossians 3. What aspect of this list do you most need to hear?
What is God’s desire in sending Christ?
The power of repentance and confession is immense in growing as a Christian… is there an area of sin in your life (perhaps seen in fear or pride) of which you need to repent and confess to God and receive forgiveness? Do you also need to repent and confess to someone else?

Going Deeper

This week reflect upon the ideas involving belief and behavior from Titus. This is a short letter but full of both powerful exhortations and grace-based foundations.
What similarities do you see between the situation in Crete and our situation in the Willamette Valley?
What kind of false teaching was happening in Crete? What kind of false teaching do you hear in the world today?
What stands out to you as you read through the letter to Titus? What role does grace play in the motivation for godly living?
How important does sound teaching and knowledge of critical Christian doctrine appear to Paul? What is the danger of false teaching? Do you feel equipped to know truth and error on critical beliefs? If not, what could you do about that?
What are your thoughts about the relationship between belief and behavior? How have you seen a connection between your beliefs (good or bad) and your behaviors?
Think about the core Christian gospel – salvation (forgiveness of sin and new life with God) comes by grace alone (unmerited favor of God), through faith alone (turning to trust in Christ personally), in Christ alone (his death/burial/resurrection). What are at least 5 ways belief in this awesome work of God changes how you see life?
Is there a belief you are holding on to, regarding yourself, your relationship with God, your neighbor, or your life situation – which God might be indicating needs alignment with the truth of God’s word in your life?
Scripture Memory: Romans 12:1-2
