Guilty to Guilt-Free in Four Easy Steps
(Or, Why Grace is So Awesome)
2/19/12
Speaker: Aaron Edewards
Hebrews 12:3-11
What Guilt is for:
_______________ of sin which leads to
_______________ of sin which leads to
_______________ of sin. Which is a good thing.
BUT I STILL FEEL GUILTY
Guilt From Sin vs the Condemnation of the Guilty
Sin produces _____________ of guilt
Sin produces _____________ guilt because we are guilty,
Those who are in Christ are not ________________.
It is this very guilt that Jesus bore on the cross and God’s Grace in Christ removes!
SO…
We feel it, we may be chastened for it, but Christians are never condemned for it.
2 Samuel 11: David’s sin, cover up, additional sin, God is displeased
2 Samuel 12: Nathan’s rebuke from the Lord, David’s confession and repentance
Which lead to:
David’s rejoicing:
Psalm 32:1-5
The ____________ of forgiveness
The ____________ of the cover up
The ____________ of confession
The ____________ of forgiveness
1 John 1:9
James 5:16
Confession brings _________________!
Confession brings _________________!
Grace, Guilt and Accusation
God ____________________ to draw us to Himself
Satan ___________________ us to separate us from God
Guilt brought on by Satan’s accusation leads to legalism, hopelessness & despair. Recognize Satan’s attack, and allow yourself to rest on God’s promise of forgiveness.
Guilt is incompatible with ___________________
Grace is incompatible with ___________________

“So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.” (Rom. 1:15)
Going Deeper
Use this section to go deeper with the material from the sermon, or for personal study, or for use with small groups.
Take five minutes per day and pray that the Holy Spirit would draw our church to a greater knowledge and reception of the gospel and that we would “Center lives (others and ours) on the person, work, and teaching of Jesus Christ”. (FBC Purpose Statement)
Read Romans 1:1-16 and 1 Cor. 15:1-5 three or four times.
Write down an answer to this question from each passage making a long list… What does this passage tell me about the gospel?
What was Paul’s desire to do for the Roman church? (v.11-12)
What was Paul’s method for accomplishing this? (v.15)
What does this tell you about the pertinence of hearing and receiving the gospel for those who are already saved from the penalty of their sin?
How does Paul’s purpose and method resonate with 1 Cor. 15:1-5?
According to Romans and 1 Cor. at what point is the gospel no longer relevant for the Christian life?
What is one implication of the gospel that speaks to your heart this week?
What is one implication of the gospel for your life that you can be thankful for today?
